In this all-Western showdown, the second and fourth squads of the conference are clashing, when the Phoenix Mercury (17-14), who want to turn their latest victory into a streak, are hosting last season’s finalists Los Angeles Sparks (18-12), who are looking to bounce back after their latest defeat.

Date/Time: 08-12-2018 15:00 EDT

Spread: Phoenix Mercury +1

Total: +161.5

Phoenix Mercury have a 17-14 record (18-13 against the spread) so far this season and currently sit on the third to last place of the Western Conference. In their last game they snapped a two-game losing streak by winning at home against the Indiana Fever with a 94-74 score, beating the odds. They are led in scoring by Diana Taurasi with 20.6 ppg, adding a team high 4.8 dimes per game. She is followed by Brittney Griner with 20.5 ppg and a team high 7.3 boards per game, while DeWanna Bonner adds 16.5 ppg, 6.8 boards and 3.1 dimes per game.

Los Angeles Sparks have an 18-12 record (14-16 against the spread) so far this season and currently sit in the second place of the West. In their last game they saw a three-game winning streak getting snapped by losing on the road against the Atlanta Dream with a 73-79 score, not beating the odds. They are led in scoring by Candace Parker with 18 ppg, adding 4.9 dimes and a team high 8 boards per game. She is followed by Nneka Ogwumike with 15.6 ppg and 7 boards per game, while Chelsea Gray adds 15 ppg and a team high 5.3 dimes per game.

Los Angeles have won both previous meetings against the Phoenix so far this season, both at home and by 3 and 8 points. Phoenix are 6-8 at home this season, while Los Angeles are 8-6 on the road. Phoenix are better offensively, scoring 84.8 ppg to Los Angeles’ 79.3, while Los Angeles have the best defense in the league, allowing 76.9 ppg to Phoenix’s 83. Los Angeles have a better field goal percentage (46.2% to 45.3%), while both teams have almost identical 3-point percentage (35.2% to 35%). Phoenix are better both in rebounding (32.2 to 30.8) and in assists made (20 to 18.8), while Los Angeles are better in turnovers committed (12.4 to 13.6). It is going to be a close game and Vegas odds give the Sparks a -1 spread and expect them to beat the odds as Mercury have been below average at home.
