Oakland took the opener of a 3-game series at Fenway Park Monday night. Do we subscribe to the zig-zag theory with our free MLB picks on Tuesday night’s A’s-Sox contest (7:10 pm ET)?  MLB Betting Previews and Free Picks: A’s vs. Red Sox.

The Line

Most MLB odds opened Boston and Eduardo Rodriguez at around -185 over Oakland and Daniel Mengden, with a total of 9.5 runs. Early betting then saw the line dip to -180 and the total bump to 10.

Set Up

Oakland took the opener of this series Monday night 6-5, cashing in at +140 on the MLB betting odds. Coming into this series, though, the A’s had lost five of their previous six games. They’ve also been held to two runs or fewer six times in their last 10 games.

Boston, meanwhile, is only 3-4 over its last seven games.

Oakland is now 3-1 against Boston this season; last year the A’s took the season series from the Sox four games to three.

Arms Battle

Lefty Rodriguez (3-0, 4.58) is 2/7 on quality starts this season. Last Thursday he held the top offense in baseball, the Yankees, scoreless on one hit through five innings. However, he gave up 10 runs through 10 innings in his previous two starts. On the season Boston is 7-0 in Rodriguez’ starts, although most of that is thanks to some very good run support.

In two starts last year against Oakland Rodriguez allowed four runs and seven hits through 14 innings, with 17 strikeouts. The Sox won both those games.

Mengden (2-4, 4.06) is 3/8 on QS this year, but three for his last five. Last Wednesday he held Houston to two runs through 6 2/3 innings, and over his last five starts he’s allowed nine ER through 28 1/3 innings. The A’s are 4-4 in Mengden’s starts this season, 4-2 over his last six.

Mengden’s first outing this year against Boston went well; he held the Sox to one run through 6 1/3 innings of a 4-1 Oakland victory three weeks ago.

Batting Splits

The A’s rank 8th in the Majors against left-handed pitching with a .259 team batting average, 18th with a .321 team OBP and 16th with a .412 team slugging percentage.

Boston, meanwhile, ranks 1st against right-handed pitching in BA at .276, 2nd in OBP at .340 and 1st in slugging at .479.

Oakland’s bullpen ranks 14th in ERA at 3.91, 25th in WHIP at 1.44 and 25th in OPS at .769.

The Sox pen ranks 11th in ERA at 3.61, 8th in WHIP at 1.22 and 9th in OPS at .678.

Free MLB Picks

We’ll call the mound match-up a wash, but we give Boston the advantage in the battling splits and the bullpen comparison. Also, with lines like this we don’t mind chasing a better price against the run line.
